Reading Responses
Each week my students are required to pick a reading response from the ones provided below and complete a reading response entry in their Reading Notebook. Every student is assigned a day of the week that their Reading Responses will be due. On the day their response is due, I will meet with the student individually, read their response, grade their response, and discuss with them how to make their next response better.
The Secret word is “Hippo.”
The reading responses will be graded using the following rubric:
| 4 | Addresses the reading response prompt and backs up the response with two or more detailed examples from the book being read. The student then makes a text to text, text to self, text to world, etc. connection to the story and describes the connection using examples. Sample 4 |
| 3 | Addresses the reading response prompt and backs up the response with two or more detailed examples from the book being read. Sample 3 |
| 2 | Addresses the reading response prompt, but does not include any specific details from the book being read or stories to which it is being compared. |
| 1 | Does not adequately address the Reading Response prompt. |

All students are required to know, be able to explain, and be able to use the six reading strategies listed above. Attached below are the worksheets we used with the story “A Mummy Mystery” in class to review these strategies on 9/2/10 and 9/3/10. Feel free to have conversations with your student about these strategies and if you use them in your own reading to help secure their understanding. I bet you use them and don’t even think about it.
Accelerated Reader
The requirements for Accelerated Reader will be added after they are discussed with the students.
